Turbidity Barrier Types

At Midwest Construction Products, we carry the two most common forms of turbidity barriers. Both forms are designed to meet or exceed the requirements for their specified applications. All turbidity barriers and turbidity curtains are State DOT and Federal DOT compliant. All Turbidity curtains and turbidity barriers are made in the USA.

Floating Turbidity Curtain

Just as the name suggests, Floating Turbidity Curtains are turbidity barriers with attached floatation. Designed to be directly installed into a body of water, the floating turbidity barrier creates a secluded turbid water zone, trapping the suspended silt. By restricting the flow of the turbid water, the suspended silt has time to settle out to the bottom.

The most common styles of a floating turbidity curtain are the Type 1.DOT, Type 2.DOT, and the Type 3.DOT. These different industry typical grades of a floating turbidity curtain, are dictated by the application variables which will affect the functional reliability of the turbidity barrier.

Type 1.DOT Turbidity Curtain

Type 1.DOT Floating Turbidity Barrier

The most commonly used turbidity barrier, this floating curtain is used in protected areas where current velocities are less than 1 feet per second. Typically sold in units 5' x 50'.

Type 2.DOT Turbidity Curtain

Type 2.DOT Floating Turbidity Barrier

Designed with a top load cable and corner stress plates, the Type 2. DOT barrier is used in areas with current velocities of 5 feet per second or more.

Type 3.DOT Turbidity Curtain

Type 3.DOT Floating Turbidity Barrier

An Adaption of the Type 2.DOT, this special barrier has had 20% or greater of its curtain fabric replaced with a polypropylene filter fabric to help reduce pressure on the curtain while retaining silt

Staked Turbidity Barrier

Similar in application to traditional silt fence, Staked Turbidity Barriers are not only used to contain the flow of runoff on projects with a significant storm water discharge, but also redirect the stormwater runoff into channels or detention areas. Made from continuous panels of vinyl-polyester (PVC) fabric, these barriers meet or exceed all DOT specifications and are a ideal for use as a stormwater BMP (Best Management Practices)

Ideal as BMP for use on:

  • Construction Sites

  • Roadside Ditches

  • Marshes, ponds, and other shallow water

  • Retention basins
